Wavea Flite Create vs Flite Play: 2.0 Differences
MPE, new filters, and FM synthesis stay locked behind Flite Create. Here's what free Flite Play users actually get in the 2.0 update.

You've got Flite Play installed, you're loving those Jupiter-8 and CS-80 samples, and version 2.0 just dropped with a pile of new features. Before you drop $69.99 on Flite Create, you need to know exactly what crosses the free/paid line and what doesn't. The answer isn't as simple as "paid gets everything new."
Here's the good news first: Wavea made the 2.0 update free for everyone, including Flite Play users. The expanded sample importing now covers SFZ, SF2, and Decent Sampler patches, with the Decent Sampler format supporting multi-sample patches. You also get standard WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and MP3 loading with missing-file feedback, plus whatever refinements landed in the granular engine since the original release.
If you're a Flite Play user who just wants to drag in your own sample libraries or convert old SFZ patches from other instruments, you already have that capability without spending a cent.
What Actually Requires Flite Create

The new oscillator morphing and waveform stacking in the VA engine, the added wavetables, the musical and exponential FM configurations, and the new filter models (comb, formant, resonator) all live behind the Create paywall. So do the new LFO modes, the expanded modulation and macro assignment system, MPE support, and the sequencer upgrades.
That's a substantial list, and it clarifies something about how Flite is structured. Wavea never designed Flite Play to be a synthesizer in the traditional sense — it's a sample playback engine with macro control, built around the 2.5GB library Sharooz Raoofi pulled from his own vintage synth collection.
Flite Create is where the actual sound design engine lives. It packs four sample slots that double as full samplers (key mapping, round robins included), an FM/VA/wavetable synth section, dual multi-mode filters, three envelopes, three LFOs, a proper modulation matrix, two 32-step sequencers, and effects including a Sinevibes granular reverb.
So when you ask whether MPE support or the new filter types made it into Flite Play, the answer is no on both counts. Those stay Create-exclusive, and they're arguably the most consequential additions in this update for anyone doing serious sound design or performance work. MPE support deserves particular attention because it changes what kind of hardware makes sense with Flite. If you're running an MPE controller like a Roli Seaboard, a LinnStrument, or an Osmose, Flite Create lets you use per-note pitch bend, slide, and pressure to modulate the synth engine independently for each note in a chord. That's a meaningfully different playing experience than fixed-velocity triggering — the kind of feature that turns a sample-based instrument into something genuinely expressive for solo lines and chord work alike.
The new filter models matter for a similar reason, but in the sound design direction. Comb filtering gives you that metallic, resonant character useful for pseudo-physical modeling and percussive tones. Formant filtering pushes toward vocal-like timbres, handy for anyone chasing a talking-synth or choir-adjacent texture without loading actual vocal samples. Resonator filters add pitched, ringing tails that work well for pads and ambient textures.
None of these are available in Flite Play, and there's no workaround. Filter type is a structural part of the synth engine, not a preset parameter you can dial in some other way.

Making the Call: Where Your $69.99 Actually Goes
If your workflow is mostly about importing outside sample content, converting old patches, or tapping into that vintage synth library with light macro tweaking, Flite Play covers you completely after this update. You're not missing sample-format support, and you're not missing the underlying quality of Raoofi's source recordings. Save your money.
If you're building original patches from scratch, layering FM against sampled content, or running comb and formant filters through a modulation matrix, Flite Create does work Play simply can't replicate. This tier is aimed squarely at sound designers who treat presets as starting points rather than destinations.
For live performers, the calculus depends entirely on your controller. If you're not on MPE hardware, the sequencer upgrades and macro assignment improvements in Create still add real performance value, letting you build evolving patterns and map expressive controls to a handful of knobs. If you are on MPE gear, Create becomes close to essential, since per-note expression is one of the more distinctive workflow improvements a soft synth can offer right now.
For sample importing specifically, Flite Play already does the job as of 2.0. One caveat: Play's macro system is simpler than Create's modulation matrix, so if you want to route an imported sample's characteristics through the new filter types or FM configurations, you'll hit the ceiling fast and need to upgrade anyway.
Wavea's decision to make the format and sample-loading improvements free builds goodwill and expands the practical usefulness of the free tier without cannibalizing the paid product's core appeal. The synthesis engine, the modulation depth, and MPE support remain the actual product being sold, and that's a defensible split. Two years after launch, Flite has become a genuinely two-tiered proposition: a free sample player that's more capable than most people expect, and a paid synth engine that earns its price for anyone serious about building sounds rather than just playing them back.
