Your session opens fine on Monday. By Thursday, after a routine OS update, three plugins vanish from your chain and one crashes your DAW on load. This is the moment most producers actually decide to upgrade — not because a marketing email told them to, but because something broke.

That scenario is playing out across studios right now as Apple Silicon becomes the default rather than the exception and DAW makers push forward with new OS compatibility requirements. Context

The VST2-to-VST3 transition is the clearest fault line. Steinberg pulled the VST2 SDK from public distribution years ago, so developers can no longer legally create new VST2 plugins — they can only maintain old licenses. Many boutique and legacy developers never finished the VST3 port, especially smaller companies that shut down or got acquired. Apple Silicon added a second fault line. Universal Binary support isn't automatic. Intel-only plugins run through Rosetta 2 translation, which works but adds CPU overhead and occasionally introduces timing glitches in sample-accurate processing.

Some older plugins never got native Apple Silicon builds at all because the company behind them stopped active development. Waves, UAD, and other major vendors moved fast on native support; smaller developers, particularly ones selling single-product plugins from the 2000s and early 2010s, often didn't.

Sound character is the part upgrade conversations tend to skip, and it's the part that matters most creatively. Older analog-modeled plugins from the early 2010s often used simpler algorithms, less oversampling, and cruder saturation curves than what's standard now. A vintage compressor plugin from 2011 might sound thinner or more digital under heavy drive compared to a 2024-era rebuild of the same hardware, because the newer version usually has better anti-aliasing and a more refined nonlinear model. That's not automatically worse.
