What Burn-In Actually Is, and Why the Panel Type Changes Everything
Burn-in happens when part of a screen ages faster than the rest because it displayed the same bright, static content for extended periods. On an OLED TV, every pixel is its own light source made from organic compounds that degrade slightly every time they fire.
A pixel that spends hours lit up white for a news ticker wears down faster than the pixels around it showing changing video. Over months or years, that uneven wear becomes visible as a faint ghost image.
QLED and Mini-LED TVs work on a fundamentally different principle. They're LCD panels with an LED backlight, either QLED's quantum-dot-enhanced edge or full-array lighting, or Mini-LED's denser grid of smaller LEDs behind the liquid crystal layer. The pixels themselves don't generate light and don't age from being lit.
That structural difference is the entire reason manufacturers market QLED and Mini-LED sets as burn-in free, and it's mostly accurate. What these panels experience instead is image retention, a temporary ghosting that usually clears within minutes to hours, not permanent pixel degradation.
How Real-World Viewing Habits Stress Each Panel
The theory only matters if it maps onto how you actually use the TV. Three habits create the highest risk: 24-hour news channels with a fixed ticker and channel bug, sports viewing with a static scoreboard graphic in one corner, and gaming with a fixed HUD like a minimap, ammo counter, or health bar.
On OLED, all three scenarios carry real risk if you're logging four or more hours a day, every day, for a year or more. The ticker and scoreboard problems are the most dangerous because the same elements sit in the same pixels at the same brightness for hours on end without variation.
Gaming HUDs carry slightly less risk because most games at least shift color and brightness around the fixed elements. But competitive gamers who leave a single title running for marathon sessions can still develop faint retention around minimaps and UI bars.

The company has backed that positioning with specific warranty language in several markets promising coverage against burn-in on qualifying models. It can make that claim credibly because of the LCD architecture underneath.
LG, the dominant OLED TV maker, treats burn-in differently. Its consumer OLED warranties generally cover manufacturing defects in the organic panel, but the language around image retention from prolonged static content is far more conditional.
Coverage often depends on the region and whether the retention counts as a defect versus expected wear from usage patterns the company advises against. LG has published usage guidance for years recommending screensavers, pixel-shifting features, and lower brightness for static content, specifically because it knows this is where OLED is vulnerable.
The practical takeaway: don't buy an OLED assuming a warranty claim will bail you out if a ticker burns into your screen after two years of daily CNN. Manufacturers built mitigation tools into the hardware — automatic pixel shifting, screen dimming after inactivity, periodic compensation cycles — precisely because they expect you to need them.

The right panel depends on what's actually going to be on your screen most often, not on which technology has the best color or contrast on paper.
