What’s New in iOS 26.4? CarPlay Video Feature in Action
Apple's latest beta release, iOS 26.4, has generated excitement in the tech community with its groundbreaking CarPlay video feature. First hinted at during WWDC 2025, this update allows users to stream video content via AirPlay on their car's display—provided they are parked. This innovation enhances the in-car experience and underscores Apple’s commitment to seamless ecosystem integration.
Why Is the CarPlay Video Feature Important?
The introduction of video streaming capabilities in CarPlay marks a significant advancement in automotive technology. As vehicles become more connected, the demand for entertainment options grows. Here’s why this feature matters:
- Enhanced User Experience: Passengers can enjoy their favorite shows and movies while waiting in the car.
- Integration of Apple Services: Users will likely access Apple TV and other streaming services.
- Safety Compliance: Limiting the feature to parked vehicles prioritizes safety.
What Features Are Included in iOS 26.4's Beta?
The first beta of iOS 26.4 reveals several references to the new CarPlay video streaming functionality in its source code. Although not visible to all users, developer Thomas Dye demonstrated the feature using Xcode's CarPlay simulator. His recent YouTube video provided a sneak peek into how this feature operates.
How Does the CarPlay Video Feature Work?
When an iPhone connects to a CarPlay system, users can play videos from any AirPlay-supported app directly on the car’s display. A new button in the Dynamic Island allows users to switch the video back to the iPhone display whenever they choose. This flexibility enhances user control over the viewing experience.
What Are the Key Features of CarPlay Video?
- Apple TV Integration: Users will access shows and movies from Apple TV and their personal libraries.
- MLS Season Pass Access: A dedicated tab for MLS Season Pass indicates a focus on sports content.
- User-Friendly Interface: The simulator showcases a straightforward interface, although it appears somewhat clunky during demonstrations.
Will the CarPlay Video Feature Be Fully Functional?
It remains uncertain whether the CarPlay video feature will be as fully functional when rolled out to the public as it appears in the simulator. Apple typically takes extra time to refine new functionalities, meaning changes may occur before the final release.
What’s Next for CarPlay Video?
The anticipated release of iOS 26.4 is projected for late March or early April 2024. However, this feature could be delayed until iOS 26.5 or later, depending on Apple's development needs. Additionally, automakers must implement support for the new CarPlay video functionality, which could slow widespread adoption across various vehicle models.
Conclusion: The Future of In-Car Entertainment
The new CarPlay video feature in iOS 26.4 represents an exciting development in automotive technology, significantly enhancing the in-car entertainment experience. While the current beta demonstrates promising functionality, users must remain patient as Apple finalizes the rollout. With increasing competition in automotive tech, Apple’s commitment to innovation and user experience will be crucial for maintaining its leadership position.
As we await the final release, it’s clear that CarPlay is evolving beyond navigation and music into a comprehensive entertainment platform, transforming how we experience our vehicles.
