Init Patch Settings for Serum, Diva & FM8 Compared

Open a factory preset in Serum, Diva, or FM8 and you're staring at a wall of modulation routings, effects chains, and macro assignments before you've programmed a single sound. If you want to design a patch from scratch, that clutter fights you at every turn. The fix is building a true init patch for each synth you own, and the exact settings differ enough between them that copying a generic "reset everything" instruction won't cut it.
Each synth handles neutrality differently because each one routes signal differently by default. Serum's wavetable engine, Diva's analog-modeled circuits, and FM8's operator stack all need distinct adjustments to reach a genuinely blank state. Here's how the same concept plays out across all three, dimension by dimension, so you can build presets you'll actually trust as a starting point.
Oscillator Setup
In Serum, mute Oscillator B and Sub entirely, then set Oscillator A to the Basic Shapes wavetable and select a simple sine or saw position at the very start of the table. Set the Wavetable Position knob to zero so you're not scanning into more complex frames, and turn off Unison by setting Voices to 1. Set Warp mode to "Off" or "None" rather than any of the classic, formant, or FM-style warp algorithms, since those actively shape the waveform before it even reaches the filter.
Diva takes a different path because it's modeling real analog circuitry rather than reading wavetables. Set OSC 1 to a sawtooth wave, disable OSC 2 and OSC 3 by pulling their volume faders down or clicking their off switches, and set Sync, PW (pulse width), and any FM amount knobs to zero. Diva's oscillator section also includes a Noise generator; mute that too, since even a small amount coloring the sound defeats the point of a neutral canvas.
FM8 flips the model completely because it's frequency modulation synthesis, not subtractive. A useful init patch here isn't "one oscillator" but two operators: a single carrier and a single modulator, with every other operator's output level dragged to zero. Set the modulator's output level to zero as well, so it's routed and ready but not yet affecting the carrier's tone. This matches the core idea behind FM synthesis in general: the connection exists, but its influence stays silent until you dial it in. Filter and Amp Envelope
Filter behavior is where lazy init patches most often go wrong, because a filter set to "off" on paper can still be quietly shaping the sound if its cutoff sits in the wrong place. In Serum, select the filter type but set cutoff fully open (127 or maximum) and resonance to zero, so audio passes through untouched. Do this even if you're tempted to just bypass the filter entirely, since you'll likely want it engaged the moment you start shaping a real sound.
Diva's filter section offers multiple filter models (Ladder, State Variable, and others), and whichever you choose, push Cutoff to maximum and Resonance to minimum. Diva also has a Filter Fat button and drive controls; turn both off for a true neutral state, since Diva's analog modeling means even small amounts of drive add harmonic content you didn't ask for.
FM8 doesn't route through a traditional subtractive filter by default, but it does have one available post-operator stack. If you're using it, open the cutoff fully; if not, leave it disengaged rather than inserted into the signal path unnecessarily.
For amp envelopes, all three synths need the same logical outcome even though the fader values differ. Set Serum's ADSR to Attack at zero, Decay at a comfortably long value or maximum, Sustain at full (127), and Release short but not instant, so notes hold at full volume as long as you press a key and don't click on release. Diva's envelope generators work the same way: zero attack, full sustain, and a decay/release setting long enough that the note doesn't fade before you let go. Set FM8's carrier operator envelope to mirror this too, since an init patch with a decaying amp envelope isn't actually neutral — it's already making a sound design decision for you.
LFO and Modulation Routing
The biggest trap in building an init patch is leaving old modulation routings connected with their depth at zero. It feels neutral because nothing audible happens, but the connection is still there waiting to surprise you later when you accidentally bump a slider. In Serum, delete every entry in the mod matrix rather than just zeroing the amounts, and unassign both LFOs from any destination. Diva's modulation system uses a mod matrix plus dedicated LFO destinations on individual modules. Clear all matrix slots and set the LFO's dedicated destination knobs, like the one that routes directly to pitch or filter cutoff, to zero with no destination selected at all. Diva also has an Arpeggiator and Chorus module active in many patches; switch both off completely in your init patch, not just mute them.
FM8's modulation matrix works through its Modulation Matrix tab, where operators can modulate each other's pitch, amplitude, or other parameters. For a true init state, keep only the one modulator-to-carrier connection mentioned earlier, and remove every other LFO assignment in the matrix rather than leaving it at zero depth. FM8 also ships with a built-in effects rack; strip delay, reverb, and chorus out of the signal chain entirely rather than bypassing them, since bypassed effects can still eat CPU and occasionally get re-enabled by accident.

Effects and Output Stage
Every one of these synths ships factory presets loaded with effects because effects sell synths on a demo reel. Empty Serum's effects rack completely in your init patch — no reverb, no distortion, no phaser, nothing inserted. The same goes for Diva's effects section and FM8's insert effects; clear them all rather than turning their mix knobs down.
Output level matters more than producers expect. Set master output or voice volume to a sensible working level, something like -12 dB to -6 dB headroom, rather than a level that clips your interface the moment you play a chord. This isn't strictly about neutrality, but an init patch that blasts your monitors at full gain will discourage you from actually using it.
Save each of these as a clearly labeled preset, something like "INIT - Blank" or "00_DEFAULT," and set it as your synth's default load state if the software allows it. Serum, Diva, and FM8 all support this through their preset browser options or preferences menu.
If you're working primarily in Serum, lean into its wavetable position and warp settings, since those are the parameters most likely to sneak coloration into a supposedly blank patch. Diva users should pay closest attention to filter drive and the Fat button, both subtle enough to miss but audible enough to matter. FM8 users need to think in operator pairs rather than single oscillators, and the discipline of stripping the matrix down to one connection will save real time once you start layering four or six operators into a serious FM patch. Whichever synth you reach for first, the ten minutes spent building this preset now will save you an afternoon of confused troubleshooting later.
