How to Digitize Vinyl Records With a USB Turntable
You bought a USB turntable. Now what? This guide walks through connecting it, picking recording software, fixing levels, removing pops, and exporting clean files.

So you picked up one of the USB turntables from our roundup, maybe the Dual DTJ 301.1 or the Pro-Ject Debut RecordMaster II. The box is open, the platter spins, and your records sound great through your speakers. But that USB port on the back is asking a question: are you actually going to use it?
Ripping vinyl to digital files is not hard, but it involves more decisions than most first-timers expect. You need to pick recording software, set your levels correctly, match the RPM, clean up the inevitable clicks and pops, and choose an export format that won't waste your time or your hard drive space. The turntable is the easy part. What you do after the needle drops is where the real comparison happens.
Why the Software You Choose Matters More Than You Think
Every USB turntable, whether it's the Thorens TD 202 or the DJ-oriented Reloop RP 8000 MK2, does the same basic job: it converts the analog signal from the cartridge into a digital audio stream your computer can read. The turntable's work ends there. Everything from that point forward, gain staging, noise reduction, track splitting, file format, depends on the software you pick to capture and process the audio.
The two most common starting points are Audacity, a free and open-source editor available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and GarageBand, which comes preinstalled on Mac computers. Each handles the ripping workflow differently, and the right pick depends on how much manual control you want versus how much you want the software to handle automatically.
Getting the Connection and Levels Right
Before any software matters, the physical setup has to be correct. Plug the turntable's USB cable into your computer, and your operating system should recognize it as an audio input device without needing a separate driver in most cases. In your computer's sound settings, or inside whichever recording software you choose, select the turntable as the input source rather than a built-in microphone.

If your deck outputs a line-level signal, your software should show a healthy, visible waveform without you touching a gain knob. RPM matters just as much as gain. No software can fix a track recorded at the wrong speed without also shifting the pitch, so this step happens at the deck, not in the DAW.
Recording Workflow: Audacity, GarageBand, and Dedicated Rippers
Audacity's strength is flexibility. You get full manual control over sample rate, bit depth, and how tracks get split, and its editing tools are powerful once you learn the interface. The tradeoff is that Audacity treats your vinyl side as one long recording by default. You'll need to either use its 'Sound Finder' tool to detect silence between tracks or manually add label points, which takes patience on records with tightly packed songs.
GarageBand offers a smoother, more guided experience if you're on a Mac. Its interface is friendlier for beginners, and dragging a recorded track directly into a project for quick edits feels intuitive. However, GarageBand wasn't built with vinyl restoration in mind, so it lacks dedicated declicking or rumble filters. You'll likely need to export to another tool for cleanup, or accept the noise as part of the record's character.
Dedicated vinyl-ripping software, such as VinylStudio, splits the difference. These tools automatically detect track breaks by listening for the silence between songs, tag files with artist and album metadata pulled from online databases, and bundle noise reduction directly into the workflow. The interface is less flexible than Audacity for deep editing, but for someone digitizing a large collection, the time saved on splitting and tagging tracks adds up fast.
Cleaning Up Clicks, Pops, and Rumble
Even a pristine, near-mint record will pick up some surface noise, and a well-loved record will have plenty. Audacity handles this through its Click Removal and Noise Reduction effects, both free and built into the software. Click Removal targets short, sharp transients, the classic 'pop,' while Noise Reduction needs a sample of quiet groove noise to learn what to filter out, then applies that profile across the track.
The key here is restraint. Push noise reduction too aggressively and you'll hear it: high frequencies turn watery, cymbals lose their shimmer, and the whole recording sounds processed. A lighter touch that removes the worst pops while leaving some natural vinyl character intact almost always sounds better than an over-scrubbed track.
Dedicated ripping software and paid plugins tend to offer more sophisticated declicking algorithms that distinguish between musical transients and needle noise more accurately than Audacity's free tools. If you're digitizing rare or heavily worn records, that extra precision can be worth paying for. For casual ripping of records in decent condition, Audacity's built-in effects are more than sufficient.
Exporting to MP3, FLAC, and Beyond
Once your track is recorded, split, and cleaned, the export format decision comes down to what you actually want to do with the files. MP3 remains the most universally compatible format, playable on virtually any device. A reasonable bitrate like 320 kbps preserves most of the detail from your rip while keeping file sizes manageable for phones and portable players.
FLAC, a lossless format, captures the recording without any compression-related quality loss, at the cost of files roughly two to three times larger than a comparable MP3. If you're archiving a record for the long term or plan to listen on higher-end audio equipment, FLAC is the safer choice, since it preserves everything the turntable and your gain-staging captured. You can always convert a FLAC master down to MP3 later, but you can't go the other direction without losing information permanently.
Both Audacity and GarageBand support exporting directly to MP3 and WAV, with FLAC export in Audacity requiring the free FFmpeg library, a quick one-time install. Dedicated ripping tools typically build FLAC export in natively, which is another point in their favor for anyone digitizing a large collection in one sitting.

If you're on a Mac and want the path of least resistance for occasional rips, GarageBand gets the job done, though you'll trade away dedicated cleanup tools.
