Best Streaming Service for Horror Movies This October

Four services, six October horror picks, one budget. Here is how Hulu and Netflix cover the most films, who needs Prime Video or Criterion Channel, and how to rotate without overpaying.

Best Streaming Service for Horror Movies This October

Six horror picks, four services, and no single subscription that covers them all. If you only want to pay for one or two, the choice is simpler than it looks once you know which films matter most to you.

This guide uses WIRED's October roundup of films to stream (https://www.wired.com/story/the-8-best-movies-to-stream-right-now/) as a worked example. It maps each horror film to the service WIRED names, shows which one or two subscriptions cover the most titles, and lays out a rotation plan so you never pay for everything at once.

The film-by-service map

WIRED names a service for six films. The table uses only that stated availability.

| Film | Service named | Taste | |---|---|---| | The Fly | Hulu | Body horror | | Barbarian | Hulu | Modern, twisty horror | | Under the Skin | Netflix | Slow-burn sci-fi | | Mononoke The Movie III: The Curse of the Serpent | Netflix | Anime horror | | Midsommar | Prime Video | Folk horror | | Altered States | Criterion Channel | Psychedelic body horror |

Verify before subscribing. This table reflects one article's claims, not a live catalog. Confirm each title on the service itself, or on a streaming availability tracker, before you enter a card number.

WIRED also lists Train to Busan, Colossal and The Social Network but does not say where they stream. They are left out of the table rather than guessed at. WIRED does add that the 1958 original of The Fly, starring Vincent Price, is on Prime Video.

Which service covers the most films

Hulu and Netflix tie at two films each. Prime Video and the Criterion Channel carry one each. The strongest pairing is Hulu plus Netflix, which together cover four of the six mapped films.

That pairing leaves out Midsommar (Prime Video) and Altered States (Criterion Channel). If you want the widest coverage for the fewest subscriptions, start with Hulu or Netflix. Add a third service only for a specific must-watch.

Which subscription fits which horror taste

The right service depends less on the total count and more on what you want to watch. WIRED covers four tastes.

Body horror. The Fly is on Hulu. WIRED calls David Cronenberg's remake a quintessential slice of 1980s body horror and says its effects work won the Oscar for Best Makeup. Altered States, the other body horror pick, is on the Criterion Channel. If you want both, you need two services.

Folk horror. Midsommar, on Prime Video, is the only folk horror entry. WIRED describes a trip to Sweden that turns out to be a front for a pagan cult. This is a one-service, one-film decision.

Sci-fi. Under the Skin, on Netflix, stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien in human form roaming Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands. WIRED recommends watching it blind.

Anime. Mononoke The Movie III, on Netflix, closes a trilogy. WIRED says it returns to the palace from the earlier films, Phantom in the Rain and Ashes of Rage, so you may want to start there. WIRED does not say where those two stream, so check. It also flags a voice actor controversy in Japan and suggests the English dub may be the better choice.

Worked examples

  • Only The Fly and Barbarian: Hulu alone covers both. WIRED calls Barbarian Zach Cregger's horror debut and says it keeps subverting genre clichés.
  • Atmospheric and unsettling: Netflix alone covers Under the Skin and Mononoke III.
  • A balanced mix: Hulu plus Netflix gives you body horror, a modern thriller, sci-fi and anime. You skip folk horror and the Criterion pick.
  • Midsommar or Altered States as your must-watch: Build around that one service first, then decide whether a second is worth it.

How to check a film is still there before paying

Streaming catalogs change, and WIRED's article gives reasons for caution. Its URL says "8 best movies," while its title says "9 Best Movies." Its listed publish date is April 18, 2026, which does not match the October framing in its opening line. It also describes Weapons as Academy Award-winning. This guide does not repeat that claim because it is unverified.

Treat the roundup as a starting shortlist, not a guarantee. A check takes a few minutes:

  1. Search for the film title on the service's own app or site.
  2. Cross-check with an independent streaming availability tracker.
  3. Confirm your region and plan tier, since catalogs can differ.
  4. Check again on the day you subscribe, not just when you plan.

If two sources disagree, trust the service itself and hold off on subscribing until the answer is clear.

How to rotate subscriptions to keep costs down

The cheapest approach is to pay for one service at a time and cancel when your watchlist is done. Hulu and Netflix make the best two stops because each holds two of the mapped films.

Start with whichever service holds your top pick. Finish its films, cancel, then move to the second. Add Prime Video or the Criterion Channel only when Midsommar or Altered States ranks high enough to justify a third stop. WIRED does not cover prices, so check current plan costs yourself.

Subscribe, watch, cancel checklist

  1. Pick your top two to four films and confirm each on the service or a tracker.
  2. Subscribe to the service that holds the most of them.
  3. Watch your list in priority order.
  4. Set a cancellation reminder for a few days before renewal.
  5. Check whether access lasts until the end of the billing period, then cancel.
  6. Move to the next service only if films remain.

Limitations. Availability can change at any time. WIRED's details are inconsistent, and several of its films have no stated service. Treat everything above as a plan to verify, not a promise.

Who should choose what

Choose Hulu if you want The Fly and Barbarian and nothing else. Choose Netflix if sci-fi and anime appeal most. Pair them for the most coverage across the mapped films, and add Prime Video or the Criterion Channel only for a specific must-watch.

Your next step: pick one service, write a watchlist of two to four titles, confirm them on the service or a tracker, and set a cancellation reminder before you subscribe.
